Every third grade teacher and bio textbook will tell us the importance of vitamins and minerals in our body. One such vitamin is B3 also known as Niacin, which is used to keep the skin, hair and nervous system healthy. Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is one of the two major forms of B3 that has been making rounds in the cosmetology world. Niacinamide is known to help manage acne, rosacea, pigmentation and wrinkles. But how? 


 

 

Turns out scientists have found out Niacinamide to be a precursor to two very important biochemical cofactors: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Both of these chemical reactions are needed in your skin cells to repair damage, propagate and function properly. From which many of the essential reactions cannot occur with the absence of NAD+ which the cells cannot make without niacinamide. 


Free radicals tend to create havoc if they happen to lose or gain an extra electron, making them highly unstable and reactive in higher doses. Niacinamide contributes an extra electron to those unpaired free radicals bringing in balance and chilling them out. 


There’s also evidence that topical niacinamide could help repair damage and restore the skin's protective barrier, which plays an important role on wrinkles, fine lines, and the moisture barrier. This is probably why niacinamide has made its way into endless skin products.
